How does Translation Memory differ from a Glossary?



Like most other translation agencies, we too use Translation Memory and glossaries everyday to save time and costs of translation and to improve quality and accuracy in the final project.
At times, we get too close to translation and localization projects to keep in mind that not everyone in the market is aware of the tools and technology we use. And then, we sometimes have to explain in detail the difference(s) between Translation Memory and a Glossary or Terminology Database.

TRANSLATION MEMORY
Translation Memory is a software system or database that is used to assist in the translation process by examining the progress of translation in real time and by memorizing each translated passage. Whenever any paragraph or sentence, that has been previously translated, comes for translation, the Translation Memory tool notifies it to the translator so as to allow him/her to insert or alter the text translated previously; thereby serving as a valuable tool for both short term and long term projects.
A Translation Memory is created at the beginning of a translation or localization project and it grows and expands with each and every translation throughout the course of the project as the content is translated and stored. Every section or string of the text that is translated is saved and added to the Translation Memory.
TM tools provide higher consistency of terminology and phrases on different documents of the same subject matter, even if there is a huge time gap between the translation of those documents, or if different translators work on discrete parts of the same document. Resultantly, the efficiency of translators is increased and their work quality is boosted.

GLOSSARY
A glossary, sometimes also called as terminology database is used for terminology management. A glossary is a collaborative tool that brings together the terms, images and reference materials that have already been approved for the translators to enhance consistency and speeding the translation process. It is also the federal compilation of company, industry-specific or technical terms. A glossary has a clear definition and proper context for the usage of approved target language translations and source language key terms and it helps the most when there is an excess of specialized content.
A glossary provides a unified approach to managing terminology for multiple projects across multiple languages. It is a valuable tool for effectively managing client specific terms in both source and target languages. In cases where there is a high volume of repetition, it can save both time and money while keeping consistency in the translation quality.
The glossary helps the translators by notifying them of the standardized approach to the material by automatically highlighting the key terms of the project they are working on. This assures them of the consistency and accuracy each time a key term occurs.
A good glossary is developed by extra research to be sure of the proper identification of key terms including acronyms, titles, names or subject specific terminology or information.

SUMMARY OF COMPARISON
A Translation Memory is used to memorize and help in translating the content consistently while a glossary serves as a guide for translators to translate particular terminology for a translation project.
The conventional glossaries and the translation memory developed during the project are updated and reconciled after the accomplishment of each job for a client.
